Question:
Renowned Artist Chuck Styles created the beautiful cover of THIS IS MY AMERICA. What was your reaction when you heard he would be the artist and when you saw the final cover illustration?

Answer:
When I first heard we were going in another direction by having an illustrator, I was incredibly nervous. There are illustrators who do not have a lot of experience in drawing Black characters. As someone who loves Black art, I did not want a cover that couldn’t represent my work at the level of my artistic appreciation.

When my editor shared Chuck Styles’ portfolio, I was blown away and incredibly impressed they found him and that he agreed to illustrate my cover, since he is so well known for other forms of art and canvases. His work is phenomenal. Fresh, hip, it’s basically for the culture. The way he uses color is expressive and bold and has that signature style where you can always tell when it’s a piece of his.

I feel like my cover is another one of his masterpieces, just in book form. Hands down, Chuck was the best selection in so many ways. Not only is he incredibly talented, but completely supportive.

I don’t know many authors who have their book illustrator support them as much as Chuck does with me. He is an exceptional match for who I am, as I am always rooting for good people to win in life. There couldn’t have been a better artist for the illustration.
